Small Group Training

About

Small Group Sessions (4-8 players) are open to all players seeking to improve various aspects of their game in addition to regular team practice sessions and games. These sessions allow coach Diego to further develop players' technical skills (how to do it) as well as tactical implementation (when and where). These sessions rarely allow for gameplay as these are supplementary sessions for players already getting considerable playing time with their clubs/teams in games and training. The main focus of these sessions is to help players improve ball mastery/comfort on the ball while developing confidence, leading to better decision-making and improved movement off the ball.

Themes

Technical Training
Development and repetition of a variety of techniques: dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting and speed of footwork are essential to helping players play at the highest levels.

Shooting / Striking
- Surfaces: bending, chipping, full/half/side volley, instep, placing
- Input and output - contact point
- Improve rotation/power/placement involving the use of arms, hips, commitment step

Collective Training
Learning sophisticated combination play/patterns between several players requires repetition and the possibility to attempt the movements, timing, insights, intuition, and reactions in multiple-player exercises. We use semi-active to passive defenders to simulate resistance and obstacles found in game situations.

Other areas covered:
- Dribbling: Running with the ball/Guiding the ball/mobility
- Finishing: Bending, driving, volleying, heading, etc.
- Passing: delivery (all surfaces) weight & intent of pass
Receiving: aerial and surface (all parts of the body)

Important

Progress can be achieved with consistent, regular practice attendance and a focus on building upon skills and techniques learned each week. Players can be grouped according to their ability to perform their share within a group. Based on the player's skills and abilities, a player can be grouped with an older or younger group. Individual technical development/training should not be confused with athletic prowess/age. Some players excel technically and can be matched with older players. This can be achieved because in this small group setting the sessions are not focused on competing one vs. one, the main area of focus is individual development.
